Why it matters for marketers
A shopping agent reads product data, reviews, pricing, and returns policies, and none of the brand film. Retailers are now choosing whether to let agents in, and a shopper whose agent can't reach a brand's products is shown someone else's.
What happened
At NRF in January, Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, so shopping agents can find, compare, and buy on a customer's behalf. Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and American Express were among more than 20 endorsing partners.
At Google Marketing Live in May, checkout through the protocol was announced at Nike, Sephora, Target, Walmart, and Wayfair. In September Meta launched Muse, a free agent that shops for people in the US and Canada after asking for their approval. Shopify made its merchants' products buyable in Muse through the protocol, while Amazon began blocking Muse from its store on 20 September.
